This coming Sunday I will be preaching on the sanctity of human life. As I began to prepare my sermon I looked in my sermon files the see if I ever preached on this theme before. Much to my amazement I could not find a sermon where I spoke directly to this issue. I say that with deep regret as a pastor who believes in the sanctity of all of human life. Maybe I have that sermon filed in some other place that I wasn’t looking but I know I haven’t preached on this theme since I’ve been the pastor at NDC. I believe that all of human life is of intrinsic worth and value because we have been created in the image of God. God said in the conversation within the Godhead in the book of Genesis, “let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground”, (1:26 NIV). I believe the crisis of abortion that has killed over 57 million babies in America since 1973 is an assault and attack on the nature and character of God. It is one of the great sins of our nation which we need to repent of. In the name of choice and freedom all of these lives have been snuffed out. David writes a rather amazing section of Scripture about his creation in the 139th Psalm when he writes, “For you created me my innermost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be”, (v.13-16 NIV). What’s amazing about this passage is David is graphically describing the development of a fetus inside of its mother’s womb. He talks about his frame not being hidden from the Lord. I believe his “frame” is referring to his skeleton structure. He speaks of God viewing his “unformed body” and I believe that’s connected to the development of his arteries and veins in his body. How could someone have a ultrasound of the womb thousand years before the time of Christ? David is writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as he’s describes God’s creative power at work in molding and shaping him. I believe God is the author of life and because we have been made in the image and likeness of God each life is of profound value and the crime of abortion is a crime against humanity. One day God will hold America responsible for the tragedy of abortion in our land. We won’t be able to say we didn’t know as Germany tried to say after the full truth of Holocaust was revealed. If our days are numbered and ordained by the Lord and written in a book as David says then I want to use my days standing for the things that represent our God. I want to speak with clarity and truth in a day of darkness and confusion about what biblical values really are. I apologize for my silence on this issue. I hope you will stand with me in the coming years for the value and integrity of life in these most difficult of times.
All for Christ,
Pastor Rich Sivo
