During this season of Thanksgiving it’s important that we remember the true source of our Thanksgiving. The Lord God of the universe is the one who has given us all the blessings that we have. We should never forget that He is the one that we praise. Let us give to the Lord God of the universe the honor due His as He is the one who has blessed us in so many special ways. In the 98th Psalm the psalmist encourages us to sing a new song to the Lord. We read, “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations”, (v.1,2 NIV). In this new song that we are to sing we are to declare that our God has provided a great Savior. The victory is purely achieved through God Himself with no human cooperation. Salvation is God’s work and we cannot take credit for it. I believe the reference to His right hand and His holy arm our references to the Lord Jesus Christ. We read in the prophet Isaiah, “Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?,” (ISA. 53:1 NIV). This passage is directly connected with the suffering servant who is fully revealed in the remainder of the 53rd chapter of Isaiah. All that God does is really for His own glory in order, to maintain his government and to bring us into a saving relationship with Himself.
The notes of this new song speak of salvation. The second verse tells us that the Lord God Jehovah has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. We are to rejoice in this salvation that we enjoy with a new song. It is a song of joyful celebration regardless of what is happening in our world. The world of the first century to which Jesus entered and to which the apostle ministered was a place of great sinfulness and evil. Much like the 21st century that you and I are living in. But God has shown His salvation and His power to save is revealed by the Lord Jesus Christ. The word “revealed” in verse two refers to something being displayed for the benefit of all to see. Jesus was ultimately displayed on the cross so the righteousness of God can be made known and that the salvation that He offers to you and I are available by calling out to Him. This is truly the greatest reason for Thanksgiving. How has God made known the revelation of His salvation? Through the proclamation of His word He has shown us His Son. Jesus is seen as the living Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). What is the purpose in God revealing His Son to us? Jesus reveals the righteousness of God and He also reveals the great heart of God to save people from their sin. Remember Jesus’s mission statement is found in Luke 19:10, “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost”. This should be the theme of our new song, knowing that it is God’s desire to share His love and His Son with a lost and dying world. So this Thanksgiving let us offer up to God a new song of joy and celebration for the great things He has done in giving us His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family and remember the source of all true Thanksgiving.
All praise to God,
