One of the keys to victorious Christian living is found in the 4th chapter of John’s 1st epistle. John writes, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (v. 4 NKJV). In this passage John has been talking about the conflict between a worldly system that is inspired by the spirit of the antichrist and that “spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh”. He tells us in this passage that overcoming victory is found in understanding that the Holy Spirit that indwells us is far greater than the spirit of the antichrist who indwells this worldly system.
The spirit of the antichrist in our world leads people to despise the name of Jesus, to neglect God’s Word and even to avoid His people. The spirit of the present worldly system leads people to delight in worldliness and especially to make light of sin. The promotion of sinful lifestyles is seen in many TV shows today. The Spirit of God that indwells us is a spirit of wisdom and truthfulness. It is the Holy Spirit that empowers us so that we might live a holy life. Remember that light is greater than darkness and falsehood, that a king is always greater than his subjects and that the Creator is always greater than that which is created.
In thinking about the fact “that greater is He that is in us than he who is in the world”, I am reminded of the story of Elisha in 2 Kings 6. In this chapter Elisha has been tipping off the king of Israel about the Syrian king’s plans to attack Israel. The Syrian king decides to seize Elisha and send an army to arrest him. When Elisha’s servant saw the Syrian army approaching, he cried out “Alas my master! What shall we do?” (v. 15b NKJV). To which Elisha very coolly responds, “So he answered, “Do not fear, for these who are with us are more than those who are them”. And Elisha prayed, and said “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see”. Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses, and chariots of fire all around Elisha”. (16-17 NKJV). We are surrounded by a great heavenly host that we know nothing about but truly “greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world”.
Paul captured this same idea in the 3rd chapter of Ephesians when he writes, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (v. 20 NKJV). This is one of my life verses. I have found that God’s Holy Spirit working in and through my life is truly the key to victorious Christian living. When we make Jesus Christ great in our lives and worship Him alone, God’s Spirit will empower and guide us to where God wants us to be and the world will hold no charm on us. Friends, walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
