One of the walks that I took several times while I was at the Yad Vashem was walking through the Hall of the Children. This hall was located right next to where our classes were being held so several days when I had some free time after lunch I walked through the Hall of the Children. During the Holocaust 1.5 million children and babies were murdered. When you enter the hall you hear the names of children, their home towns, and age when they died. This loop of names is constantly going. The hall is a very quiet and sad place, a place of serious reflection. There are six simple candles that are lit with dozens of mirrors to reflect the candles, giving the impression of thousands of points of light.
Why has the nation of Israel gone to such great lengths to find the names of Holocaust victims (they’ve collected some 4.3 million names so far) and then the names of the children? Each of these names was a name that mattered to someone. Each person that was murdered in the Holocaust mattered because they were created in the image of God. These children (1.5 million) were gifts to their families and the joy and delight of their parents for a season. But when a culture loses its sense of accountability before God, as Germany did, there is no telling what acts of horror and terror will befall that nation. But if Darwin is right and it’s all about the survival of the fittest then what difference does it make? Darwin’s teachings were one of the justifications the Nazis used to eliminate the weak and defenseless in their society. But if there is a God in heaven who will judge in righteousness and truth then should we not seek to know Him and serve Him? If there is a God in heaven who has created us in His image and after His likeness should we not seek to protect and defend human life as an expression of service to God? Isn’t all life valuable if it’s created in the image of God?
Then I thought about America’s own Holocaust- over 55 million babies murdered in the name of choice! I could not get away from this very unsettling thought of the judgment that must be awaiting America. Life- human life- created in the image and likeness of God. I thought about the young actress that recently murdered her own baby and video-taped the whole abortion, joking throughout the procedure. I was so struck at Yad Vashem by those who did nothing to stop the murder of Jews, even America, when we knew exactly what the Nazis were doing. And then I thought about America’s Holocaust- 55 million babies!! And life goes on just like it did in Germany until judgment came. Part of the problem in America is that there are no names or faces to attach to these babies. But God knows their names and what they might have been. I couldn’t get away from this sobering thought at Yad Vashem or even here!
