I would like to share one last thought on the events of this past weekend where we paused to reflect on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th, 2001. On Sunday evening I was watching the Frontline documentary entitled “Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero”. It was one of the most powerful documentaries I have ever seen. One of the ladies sharing on this program (a Buddhist woman) talked about the planning, organization and funding that went into this incredibly evil attack. Then she talked about those heroes who responded by running into the buildings to save others. Some who went back several times to save others with no organization or planning, just doing the right thing. I think it’s interesting that on 9/11 we saw one of the most disgusting and evil display of humanity that has ever been demonstrated. But in response to the terrible evil, that was done in the name of religion, we also saw the clearest display of the “better angels” of our fallen nature.
The Word of God tells us that mankind was created in the image and likeness of God. When our 1st parents, Adam and Eve, sinned, that image was profoundly distorted. Yet it was not totally eradicated or eliminated. Deep in the heart of humanity is this seed of God’s image that on that day, 9/11, rose up and seized the moment in surrender and self-sacrifice. Yes, those men who flew those planes into the buildings were possessed by an evil from hell. In response the question has been raised “Where was God?” Can I suggest, very carefully, that God was present with those who rushed into the buildings and with those on Flight 93 who fought to stop the terrorist from greater evil.
Remember Jesus’ words in the 15th chapter of John’s gospel when he said “My command is this; love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (v.12-13 NIV). Those firefighters and police officers risked their lives for total strangers. Think of God giving His Son for His enemies and Jesus’ words on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing”. Where was God? Even in the midst of incredible evil God was there and He was and is working even when we don’t understand what He is doing.
For God’s Glory,
